Productivity tracker for Mac: understand your working patterns

drifty helps you see how your working day unfolds on your Mac. It records activity automatically, adds classifications, and brings the results into daily and weekly views you can review.

Busy but unsure where the day went? Review the record to see where you focused and where you kept switching away.

For Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 13 or later.

See what filled the day

Your Day shows the order of recorded activity, alongside an app usage breakdown and a productivity ring. You can view the same captured blocks by activity category or productivity label.

That helps you ask a more useful question than “How many hours was my laptop open?” Perhaps you spent the afternoon moving between a design file and feedback. The number of app switches alone will not tell you whether that was a distraction. Reviewing the activity gives you context.

Check any label that looks wrong before drawing conclusions from the totals.

Find patterns across the week

One interrupted afternoon may tell you very little. A similar pattern across several weeks is more useful to investigate.

drifty's weekly view arranges captured activity by day. Each card keeps its source apps and sites, so you can look behind a total. Insights provides a wider view, with a weekly attention rhythm and app lists. You can switch between Week, Month, and 90 days to explore a longer period.

Question to investigateWhere to start
When do I settle into focused work?Review the attention rhythm, then inspect those periods.
Are fragmented afternoons repeating?Compare recorded activity across several days.
Which apps appear around drift periods?Check the app lists and the sessions behind them.
Did a change to my routine help?Compare similar working days before and after the change.

These views describe recorded patterns. A chart cannot tell you on its own what caused them.

A personal productivity tracker for different kinds of work

Software engineers and other technical roles

A long research session may be part of solving a difficult problem. Review the supporting activity before treating time outside your editor as wasted. Personal projects can help separate named pieces of work that happen in the same apps.

Accountants and legal professionals

A browser session might involve client research or an accounting portal. Use the record to recall the day, and review the privacy settings before capturing sensitive client context.

Designers and marketers

Research and production often happen in the same browser. Look at the sessions behind a category to understand whether the time supported the assignment.

Freelancers and consultants

Compare your planned working day with the activity that was captured. Use that review to make your next estimate more realistic, while accounting separately for work away from the Mac.

Turn one observation into a small change

Start with a question you can act on. “Why do I keep losing the first hour after lunch?” is easier to investigate than “Am I productive?”

Review that part of the day and check the labels. If repeated message checks seem to be interrupting a task, try a set time for checking them. Compare a few similar days afterward.

Keep the task itself in view. Finishing a useful piece of work matters more than keeping a chart green.

Productivity tracking FAQ

  • What does a productivity tracker measure?

drifty records observable Mac activity and classifies it for review. It can show time patterns around your apps and sites. It cannot measure the usefulness of an idea or the quality of a finished task.

  • Is more focused time always better?

No. Necessary admin and genuine breaks belong in a working day. Read focus totals alongside the work you completed and the demands of that day.

  • Can drifty track time by project?

drifty supports personal projects. You provide a name and a description that helps classification match captured activity. The documented refresh covers the latest seven days. See how project matching works for its current scope.

  • Is the weekly view a planning calendar?

No. It is built from captured activity. Use it to review what happened and inform the schedule you create elsewhere.
